Based on Shunryu Kempo Karate 隆館 拳法 唐手 (lit. Excellence, Fist Law, Chinese Hand) - Shunryu Kenpo 隆館 拳法 is a motion based combat art that has been refined and adjusted for the times we live in. Drawing on traditional Chinese/Okinawan Kempo Karate* it contains a natural blend of classical moves modified to fit the purpose of a ‘Modern’ Self Protection System. It is a no holds barred method of self defence that utilises swift percussive strikes that include: Punches, Chops, Claws, Rakes, Elbows, Knee’s and Kicks as well as a number of locks, throws, buckles and trips. It is unlimited in its use of the body’s natural weapons.

Shunryu Kenpo 隆館 拳法

Shunryu Kenpo 隆館 拳法 consists of a combination of four cultures (Chinese, Japanese, Okinawan and English) that share a common lineage or methodology.

Shunryukan Kenpo 俊隆館  (lit. Excellence Hall of Fist Law) is the name of our Dojo and refers to the group (Kai) that study our method of Kenpo.

Shunryu Kenpojutsu 拳法術 (lit. Excellence, Fist Law Art) is made up of the following practices (Approx.)

60% Strikes
10% Locks (Joint Manipulation)
10% Groundwork & Grappling
10% Kata
5% Throws
5% Weapons

The ‘Shunryu Kenpo Karate Academy (SKKA)’ is the English name of our School and is more commonly used by our students - however we also use the Japanese 'Shunryukan Honbu Dojo' 俊隆館 本部 道場 to describe our Head Quarters.

Instinctive Kenpo Method

Instinctive Kenpo is the name given to our conceptual reality based system that takes Kenpo into the modern age by applying contemporary principles to teach 'Practical' street safe techniques. The method is taught alongside Shunryu Kenpo and allows another path to feed into the framework that is our way. This method is a 'No-Gi' system compared to the more traditional Shunryu Kenpo. Students are encouraged to train in normal clothes, shoes etc. However as rule sessions are practiced in Jogging Bottoms and our Academy T-shirts'.

Zen Connection

Shunryu Kenpo is also heavily underpinned by the Practice of Zen Meditation 'Zazen 坐禅’ (lit: seated meditation). Not only does this help our students to unwind after a hectic and stressful day, it also procures the correct acquisition of breathing techniques increasing our ability to be mindful in the dynamic and physical aspects of training. However this practice is not generally taught during our 'Public Classes' and is mainly introduced to committed Kempoka during our Meditation Classes held at the Shunryukan Honbu Dojo.

"Kenpo is an inseparable union of mind and body expressed through the individual nuances of each and every devotee. The basic movements pave the way for more complex but deadly moves flowing from one to another never stopping but to pause. Adjusting the body’s direction and speed utilising intermittent power during and after employment of major and minor techniques. It is pliable in its application so that action blends with reaction to deal with situations as they arrive or even before, it procures the intuitive nature that we all posses. Kenpo is an understanding of life"
