JUNSEI RYU SHREWSBURY: JULY 2010 JUJUTSU & KENJUTSU GRADINGS:
3rd July 2010

Saturday the 3rdof July saw a dedicated number of students from the Junsei Ryu Shrewsbury martial arts club pass their Bi-annual Grading Examinations with excellent results. The students all of which train at Shrewsbury under the guidance of Taran McCarnun Renshi have trained hard for many months in order to get this far; including five students who travel up to 20 miles three times a week in order to train in the traditional Japanese martial arts of Jujutsu (Grappling and Throwing) and Kenjutsu (Swordsmanship) in a traditional manner.

Dr Ash McKee Shihan the founder and patron of the Junsei Ryu martial arts group oversaw the grading itself and had the following to say, “Junsei Ryu is not just another martial arts club, it is a family and a way of life. What stands us apart from the majority of other so called martial artist is that all of our techniques and methodology are taught in a traditional manner with absolutely zero sporting application. These student who graded today are living proof that traditional martial arts are alive and well in Shrewsbury, they should all be very proud of their hard work and dedication.”

Shrewsbury Instructor Taran McCarnun had the following to say “All of my students have worked so very hard towards this day, it makes me really proud to know that I am passing on a life-skill that has been a major part of my life for over 28 years. All of the students can hold their heads up high knowing that they are set to carry on a martial tradition dating back over 1000 years.”

BUSY BUSY BUSY:
29th March 2010

Firstly we must apologise for the recent lack of updates on the Junsei Website, things at Honbu have gone from busy to utterly hectic... which can only be a good thing. Last months sponsored Hike raised an amazing £282.55 which at such short notice was utterly unexpected. A new sponsored event is now in the pipeline, with all funds going towards new equipment that will be distributed between the various Junsei clubs.  A little over a week ago Severnside Housing Association (based in Shrewsbury) once again asked Junsei Ryu Shrewsbury to provide them with a all day martial art workshops as well as a formal demonstration for their Multi-Culture day. The day was a great success and Les Freeman Sensei, Taran McCarnun Renshi and Junsei Student Gareth Burgess entertained the crowds with displays of Kenjutsu, Sojutsu, Batto, Iaijutsu, Kusarifundo and Jujutsu for over five hours. The demonstration in the main hall was a great success and was truly a testament to Les freeman Sensei who with just one hour of practice managed to get 10 students from the Harlescott Grange School performing Sword Kata (With Bokken of course) almost flawlessly. Well Done All! Finally the 28th of March was the Spring Keiko Gunjin (Battle Camp) with all of the profits from this event going to the Help-For-Heroes military charity. Instructors on the day were Dr Ash McKee Shihan (Jujutsu) Taran McCarnun Renshi (Kama-Jutsu) Chris Collins Sensei (Judo / Jujutsu) and Les Freeman Sensei (Qi-Gung / Muso Shinden Ryu). Over four and a half hours the attending students practiced the above arts with real gusto and did each of their sensei proud. Some pictures of the event can be found in the GALLERY 2 with many more to be uploaded over the coming days. If you have any pictures of the event that you would like to add to our gallery pages, then please contact Taran McCarnun Renshi directly and a credit will be given to you on the website. Domo Arigato  All the Sensei at Junsei Ryu

Haughmond Hill Sponsored Hike Feb 2010

SPONSORED HIKE IN SAMURAI ARMOUR:
19th FEBRUARY 2010

We would just like to say a huge thank you to all those Junsei students and supporters who have raised sponsorship money and walked the 2.1 miles up, over and around the frozen "Haughmond Hill" just outside of Shrewsbury in what was not the best of weather. Between the Snow, Ice, Rain and thigh deep mud a hard walk was had by all, but hopefully was enjoyed as much by the students as it was by Taran Renshi (who had agreed to hike the distance in a full Yoroi (Suit of Samurai Armour). Although the steel on the armour was as cold to the touch as the frozen ground, Taran Renshi insists that the sponsorship event was well worth it. Further details of amounts raided will be posted as soon as all sponsorships have been collected. Pictures of the walk taken by Junsei student Richard Madeley have now been added to the gallery pages.
