Kobujutsu is the term used by enthusiasts of the traditional Japanese and Okinawan martial arts to describe the practical application of, and study into the use of combat weaponry. Although amongst martial artists the term Kobujutsu is somewhat uncommon, the independent disciplines that make up its whole are widely known, and include the use of weapons like the Bo (Staff) the Katana (Japanese Long Sword) the Tanto (Dagger) and the Nunchuku (Rice Flails). Traditionally the term Kobujutsu is translated from Japanese as “Ancient Warrior Art” and is used in reference to the wide variety of martial training that was afforded to Japans warriors of old; in modern usage however both the term Kobujutsu and Kobudo “Ancient Warrior Way” are used to describe only the traditional weapon systems of Japan and Okinawa.
