An important aspect
of training within the more physically combative arts of the Junsei Ryu is the division of children and adults within a class.
Junsei Ryu generally does not accept the training of Children and Adults at the same time for a number of reasons.
1) The techniques taught to Children and Adults frequently differ in their application and as such there is a danger of
children mimicking the more dangerous techniques practiced by older members of the club. Would you want your seven year old
to be practicing the advanced choking techniques taught in an adult class?
2) Nage-Waza (Throwing) forms a huge
part of the Junsei Ryu syllabus, and the dangers of adults being thrown into or on top of smaller students is obvious.
3) Children do not have the same levels of stamina and physical and mental endurance as adults. Almost every child
would be unable to keep up with the pace of an adult class.
4) The Junsei Ryu implements a strict CRB
(Criminal Records Bureau) check on all adult instructors regardless of their grade. This is designed to ensure that junior
students are only ever left in the hands of responsible adults. To insist that every adult member of the organisation undergo
the enhanced CRB checks would be logistically improbable, not to mention highly costly.
Many martial arts club (Including the majority of those teaching Karate, Taekwondo, Jujutsu
and Judo) quite happily train children and adults together, claiming that it builds comradery. In truth this is normally the
case when the instructor simply wants to save a little extra money on their rent, and make a little extra money for himself.
Such attitudes are in our opinion as hazardous as they are inapropriate.
Before
taking your child to any martial arts club, please ensure you make the following checks.
1) All instructors are
fully licensed and insured.
2) All instructors are fully CRB checked, and that the CRB is up to date.
3) The organisation impliments
a "Child Protection policy" and that you can see a copy of this when requested.
4) The Instructor offerers
separate children and adult classes for any physical martial arts
5) At least one person is a fully qualified in First
Aid, and that their qualification is up to date.
6) The instructor has a clear pricing policy detailing membership costs,
insurance costs, equipment costs and the costs of gradings (examinations). make sure this is clear and that you will not be
caught out with hidden charges.
